  • For doctoral/postdoc tracks: Research proposal, clarity of future research plan, quality of interview with supervisors or project heads. Alignment with available supervisors or research teams. (Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project)

  • Motivation / goals relevance: Why chosen subject area and university; how it fits career / research plan. A coherent, compelling motivation letter helps. (Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project)

  • Correct and timely submission: Deadlines, document format, identity verification etc. Late or incomplete applications are disqualified. (events.nsu.ru)

Practical Tips to Strengthen Your Application

  • Start early: prepare transcripts, translations, any awards / publications well before deadlines.

  • Choose subject area(s) you are genuinely strong in; focus achievements relevant to those areas.

  • Write a clear, focused motivation letter: state your academic / career goals, why Russia and that subject area / university, what you bring.

  • If applying to doctoral/postdoctoral track, identify potential supervisors in advance; read their research and reflect that in your proposal or motivation.

  • Practice sample tasks: many subject area pages publish demo or sample tasks. Familiarity with task format (time constraints, proctoring) helps. (events.nsu.ru)

  • Ensure technical readiness: stable internet, required computing resources, webcam for verification phases.

  • Pay attention to selection of universities: choose several (up to 6) to improve chances in case your first choice does not accept. (Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project)

FAQ: Common Doubts

Q1: Can I apply even if I do not have my degree certificate yet (but am completing studies in the competition year)?
A: Yes. For bachelor’s/master’s/doctoral tracks, applicants who are completing the relevant education in the academic year of the competition are eligible. They may upload a transcript or equivalent and must provide final degree documentation later. (Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project)

Q2: Can I apply to more than one subject area or more than one track?
A: You can apply to multiple subject areas (for each you may need a separate motivation letter). But you must choose only one track (bachelor, master, doctoral, post-doctoral). If you become winner or runner-up in multiple subject areas, ultimately you must pick one to accept. (Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project)

Q3: Is there a stipend for living costs, travel, or accommodation?
A: The scholarship covers tuition and sometimes the preparatory Russian language year. The official rules do not universally guarantee accommodation, travel, or medical insurance or specify stipend amounts. These additional costs are usually the responsibility of the student unless a specific university offers further support. (Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project)

Q4: Can I combine this scholarship with others or double up?
A: The rules state that winners of multiple Russian government scholarship competitions must choose only one quota under which they will enroll; you cannot hold two government quota scholarships simultaneously. (Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project)

Q5: What if I win but cannot fulfill language requirements (for Russian-taught program)?
A: You may be required to take the preparatory Russian language course (tuition-free) before starting the regular degree program. Upon completing that and meeting required proficiency, your place is secured. (Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project)
