Overview
The Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP) is funded by the Swedish government and administered by the Swedish Institute — a public agency under Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs. It provides fully funded master's degrees in Sweden to ambitious professionals from 34 eligible countries who are committed to driving sustainable development in their home regions.
What I find most interesting about this scholarship when I compare it to others on this list is its explicit leadership and work experience focus. To have a successful application, you should have a clear idea of how your education will contribute to the sustainable development of your home country and region. SI Sweden is not funding academic achievement alone — it is funding professionals who are already working and who have a concrete plan to apply their Swedish education back home.
Pakistan is not currently on the SI eligible countries list. The scholarship is open to students from 34 specific countries. If you are Pakistani and reading this, the most relevant sections for you are the practical structure of the application and the broader scholarships ecosystem — as a model of what to look for in similar Nordic scholarships.
Benefits and Funding
Benefit | Coverage | Amount / Notes |
|---|---|---|
Tuition fees | Fully Covered | Paid directly to Swedish university each semester |
Monthly living allowance | Fully Covered | SEK 12,000/month (approx. USD 1,100) tax-free |
One-time travel grant | Fully Covered | SEK 15,000 for most countries; SEK 10,000 for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine |
SI Network for Global Professionals membership | Included | Workshops, leadership development, networking |
Sweden Alumni Network membership | Included post-study | Ongoing career and networking support |
Insurance | Health insurance included | Covers illness during scholarship period |
Dependants' costs | Not Covered | SI will not cover family relocation costs |
I put this table together because the travel grant amount is different for Eastern European and Central Asian countries than for others. Most students receive SEK 15,000 while students from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine receive SEK 10,000.
The most underrated benefit in my view is the SI Network for Global Professionals. This is an active alumni and current scholar network with real professional value — workshops, mentorship, and connections to Swedish institutions are all part of what scholars access during and after their studies.
Eligibility
Requirement | All Applicants |
|---|---|
Citizenship | One of 34 eligible countries (see official SI list) |
Work experience | At least 3,000 hours (for most eligible countries) prior to February 2026 |
Leadership experience | Documented leadership role — within employment, organization, or community |
Academic level | Bachelor's degree; must be admitted to eligible master's programme in Sweden |
Tuition liability | Must be liable to pay tuition at Swedish universities (i.e., non-EU/EEA in most cases) |
Application fee | Must have paid University Admissions application fee on time |
Previous SI scholarship | Ineligible if previously received SI scholarship |
Residence in Sweden | Ineligible if already studying in Sweden |
The 3,000-hour work experience requirement is the barrier most applicants either miss or miscount. The 3,000 hours must have been accumulated from a maximum of three employers. Part-time work counts proportionally. If you work 20 hours per week, you accumulate 1,000 hours in approximately 50 weeks.
The most critical structural point: the SI Scholarship requires two separate applications to two different portals. Missing the first portal deadline means automatic disqualification from the scholarship.

How to Apply — Step by Step
Visit the SI Website (https://si.se/en/apply/scholarships/swedish-institute-scholarships-for-global-professionals/) and download the list of eligible master's programmes for 2026–27. Only programmes on this list qualify.
Go to UniversityAdmissions.se and apply for up to four master's programmes between October 16, 2025 and January 15, 2026. Pay the application fee before the deadline.
Save your 8-digit personal application number immediately after applying. This number is mandatory for the scholarship application. An incorrect number will disqualify you. My tip: write it down in three places.
Prepare your scholarship documents between January and February using the official SI templates. Do not use free-format documents — templates are mandatory; you must use the official 2026/2027 templates provided by SI for your CV, Proof of Work, and Reference Letters.
Open the SI Scholarship application portal (apply-scholarships.si.se) from February 9, 2026.
Complete the scholarship application and upload all documents by February 25, 2026 at 14:59 CET.
Wait for March 26 university admissions results. If not admitted to an eligible programme by this date, your scholarship application will not proceed.
Required Documents Checklist
Completed SI Scholarship online application form
CV (using official SI template — mandatory)
Motivation letter explaining sustainable development contribution
Proof of work experience (using official SI template — mandatory)
Two reference letters (using official SI template — mandatory)
Copy of bachelor's degree certificate
English proficiency certificate
The single document most applicants underestimate is the proof of work experience. The SI template is specific — it must confirm your employer, role, start and end dates, and weekly hours. A general employment letter in your employer's format will not be accepted as a substitute.
For reference letter preparation, read How to Get Strong Recommendation Letters for Scholarships in 2026 — SI reference letters must use the official template but the substance of what they say about your leadership and development work matters enormously.
Selection Criteria
The Swedish Institute uses a holistic assessment model. No single factor guarantees selection. The process identifies applicants who will contribute to sustainable development in their home countries after graduation.
Reviewers evaluate: academic merit, quality of motivation for studying in Sweden, leadership experience, professional contribution to date, and clarity of post-study impact plan. The motivation for study should explicitly connect your chosen master's programme to a specific development goal or challenge in your home country.
What separates shortlisted SI Scholarship applicants from rejected ones is the specificity of the sustainable development connection. A generic statement about wanting to contribute to your country's development is not enough — name the specific sector, the specific gap, and how your Swedish master's degree addresses it in a way no other program could.
Practical Tips
Apply to all four permitted master's programmes at University Admissions — not just one. More admitted programmes means more options if your first choice is competitive. The scholarship is tied to admission; more admissions mean higher scholarship prospects.
The SI Scholarship application portal is only open for about 15 days. Prepare everything before it opens — you cannot write a quality motivation letter in 15 days while also working or studying. Start drafting in November or December.
Read How to Write a Scholarship SOP in 2026 before writing your motivation letter — the structural principles are identical to those of an SOP.
