Overview
UCAS is the central application system for undergraduate courses at UK universities. If you are an international student applying for a bachelor's degree at a UK university, every application goes through UCAS. Graduate and postgraduate applications go directly to individual universities, not through UCAS. This guide covers both processes.
Why Study in the UK in 2026
The UK offers one-year taught master's programs — a major advantage for students who want to re-enter the workforce quickly and at lower total cost than a two-year program elsewhere. British undergraduate degrees take three years. The Graduate Route visa allows two years of unrestricted work after graduation, or three years for PhD graduates.
The cost is real. UK tuition for international students runs £14,000–£38,000 per year, and living costs in London exceed £1,800/month. Students who choose the UK are paying for prestige, English language, and access to specific professional networks — particularly in finance, consulting, and law.
Key UCAS Deadlines for 2026 Entry
Deadline | Date | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary | October 15, 2025 | Competitive courses requiring earlier review |
Main UCAS equal consideration deadline | January 14, 2026 | All undergraduate courses — submit by this date |
UCAS Extra opens | February 26, 2026 | Apply to additional universities if you have no offers |
Final UCAS deadline | June 30, 2026 | Last date before clearing |
Clearing opens | Early July 2026 | Match applicants with remaining university places |
University offer deadline (Chevening) | July 9, 2026 | Chevening scholars must have an unconditional offer by this date |
I put this deadline table together because the most common UCAS question I hear from international students is "when is the deadline?" — but there are actually four different deadlines depending on what you are applying for. Missing October 15 for Oxford closes that application permanently.
The UCAS Application — Step by Step
Register on UCAS Hub (https://www.ucas.com). The application portal opens September 2 each year for the following September entry. For 2027 entry, it opens September 2, 2026.
Choose up to five courses. You can apply to five courses at five different universities, or five courses at fewer universities. UCAS allows you to apply to up to five different courses or universities through a single application. Choose a mix of competitive, mid-range, and accessible programs.
Write your personal statement. This is the single most important document in your UCAS application. It is limited to 4,000 characters (approximately 650 words). It must explain why you want to study this specific subject, what relevant experience or study you have done, and your future plans. It is read by all five universities you apply to — so it must be genuinely motivating for your chosen subject without being course- or university-specific.
Arrange your academic reference. If you are applying through a school or college, a teacher provides your reference and submits the application. If applying independently, you are responsible for ensuring your referee submits by your deadline.
Submit before the relevant deadline. For most courses: January 14, 2026 for equal consideration. All applications submitted by 18:00 UK time on 14 January 2026 are given equal consideration.
Respond to offers. When universities make you conditional or unconditional offers, you choose a Firm (first choice) and Insurance (backup) option through UCAS Track. You decline all other offers.
Confirm your exam results. For conditional offers, your place is confirmed when your A-levels or equivalent results meet the stated conditions.
Graduate Applications — Direct to Universities
Postgraduate applications do not go through UCAS. Apply directly to each university's online portal by their stated deadline. Most UK universities accept postgraduate applications on a rolling basis, but popular programs close when full — apply early.
For postgraduate programs you need: undergraduate degree (typically 2:1 equivalent), IELTS or TOEFL (usually 6.5–7.5 overall), personal statement, two academic references, and sometimes a portfolio or writing sample depending on the program.
Application Requirements Table
Requirement | Undergraduate | Postgraduate Masters |
|---|---|---|
Academic qualification | A-levels, IB, or equivalent secondary qualification | Bachelor's degree — 2:1 equivalent (at least 60–70%) |
English language | IELTS 6.0–7.0 / TOEFL 80–100 | IELTS 6.5–7.5 / TOEFL 90–110 |
Application portal | UCAS (https://www.ucas.com) | Direct to each university's portal |
Personal statement | One statement for all five choices | Separate personal statement per application |
References | Academic reference through UCAS | 2 academic references per application |
Transcripts | Uploaded to UCAS | Uploaded to each university portal |
Application fee (UCAS) | £27 (single) / £22.50 (multiple up to 5) | Not applicable (direct application) |
The CAS Letter and UK Student Visa
Once you accept a firm offer and it becomes unconditional, the university sends you a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) letter. This is the document you need to apply for a UK Student visa.
CAS in hand, you apply for your UK Student visa on the UK Visas and Immigration portal (https://www.gov.uk/student-visa). You will need: valid passport, CAS letter with your unique CAS number, financial proof showing you can cover tuition and living costs, English language qualification (IELTS or equivalent), and ATAS clearance (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) if your subject requires it (mostly for STEM postgraduate research).
Financial requirements for the UK Student visa: you must show you have £1,334/month for living costs (London) or £1,023/month (outside London) for up to 9 months, plus first-year tuition if not already paid.
Costs and Funding
UK tuition runs £14,000–£38,000 for international undergraduates per year. For master's, typically £14,000–£28,000 for one year. The Chevening Scholarship covers full tuition and living costs for one-year master's programs. The Commonwealth Scholarship covers tuition and living for eligible developing country students. For both, see the opportunity guides on ScholarsFunds.org.

Practical Tips
Apply to a genuinely diverse mix of universities. Applying to five highly competitive Russell Group universities with your firm and insurance choices both needing grades you may not achieve leaves you in clearing — a stressful situation with limited options. Include at least two universities where your academic profile comfortably exceeds the typical offer.
Book your IELTS well before the UCAS deadline. Book the English test at least 2–3 months prior to the UCAS submission date. Test results take 2–4 weeks to arrive, and applying without a valid language test score creates complications.

You can apply to up to five courses through UCAS. These can be at five different universities or the same university. If you are not offered a place at any of your five choices, UCAS Extra opens from late February, allowing additional applications to programs with remaining spaces.
What is a CAS letter for UK student visa?
A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a unique reference number generated by your UK university once you have accepted an unconditional offer. It contains details about your program, fees, and English language requirement. This number is required to apply for your UK Student visa and cannot be substituted with any other document.
How much money do I need to show for a UK student visa?
As of 2026, you must show financial evidence of £1,334 per month for up to 9 months if studying in London (£12,006 total), or £1,023 per month outside London (£9,207 total), plus your first year of tuition if not already paid to the university. Is UCAS used for postgraduate UK applications?
No. UCAS is used for undergraduate applications only. Postgraduate master's and PhD applications are made directly to each UK university through their own online portals. There is no central postgraduate application system in the UK, though some universities use a shared portal.
Disclaimer: UCAS deadlines, visa financial requirements, and CAS procedures change annually. All information is based on official UCAS and UKVI guidance verified as of April 12, 2026. Always confirm current requirements at ucas.com and gov.uk/student-visa before applying.
