How is the IELTS Band Score Calculated?
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) scores are reported on a 9-band scale. Each of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) is given a band score from 1 to 9. The Overall Band Score is the average of these four scores, rounded to the nearest half or whole band.
Rounding Rules
- If the average ends in .25, the score is rounded up to the next half band (e.g., 6.25 becomes 6.5).
- If the average ends in .75, the score is rounded up to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 becomes 7.0).
- If the average ends in .125, it rounds down (e.g., 6.125 becomes 6.0).
Example:
Listening: 6.5 + Reading: 6.5 + Writing: 5.0 + Speaking: 7.0 = 25.0
Average: 25.0 / 4 = 6.25
Overall Score: 6.5

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Academic and General Training Reading scores?
The Academic Reading test contains texts with more complex vocabulary and sentence structures, while the General Training test uses texts from everyday life. Because the General Training test is slightly easier, you need to answer more questions correctly to achieve the same band score compared to the Academic module. For example, 30 correct answers is a Band 7.0 in Academic but only a Band 6.0 in General Training.
How can I improve my IELTS score?
Improving your IELTS score requires practice and understanding the test format. Focus on expanding your vocabulary, practicing time management, and taking mock tests. For Speaking and Writing, it is helpful to get feedback from a teacher or expert.
Is the IELTS score calculator 100% accurate?
Our calculator uses the official IELTS scoring and rounding rules. However, for the Writing and Speaking sections, the score is subjective and depends on the examiner. The calculator provides an accurate calculation of the Overall Band based on the input scores you provide.
